Why use a Routine Chart for Kids and Toddlers?
I’ve found with my oldest (6), that he is fully able and wants to get ready by himself. The problem is he constantly needs reminding of what needs to get done.
- “Did you make your bed?”
- “Don’t forget your socks!”
- “Hey, it’s time to brush your teeth!”
- “Do you have your backpack?”
With this printable routine chart he is now able to complete all the tasks he needs to for his morning and bedtime routine all by himself! We only have to remind him “Hey, time to get ready for bed” or “Did you do your morning routine?” and it’s done!
It saves us so much time and honestly, so much stress! But it also incentivizes him to do tasks independently and efficiently.
A printable routine chart allows kids to physically tick off each completed task, such as getting dressed or brushing their teeth, providing them with a sense of accomplishment and promoting independence.
It also keeps us parents in the loop on progress made throughout the day and helps create structure in a child’s day-to-day life. Overall, introducing a printable routine chart into your child’s life is in everyone’s best interests!

- (Optional) packing tape or lamination
How to use the flip up routine chart:
After editing your routine chart to fit your own needs using the editable Canva template, download your edited routine chart and print it, double sided, on cardstock. This way the flaps say “done ✅ ” when flipped up.
Then, fold the page in half hamburger style, and cut the strips along the dashed lines, and attach a velcro dot to each task. You may also want to laminate the page or just use some packing tape as lamination so the velcro dots doesn’t rip the paper with time.
Finally, hang your routine chart where your child can see it. Now your kids can easily flip up the strip to say “done” for each task as they complete them throughout the day!
How to Make Marking off Items Easier for Your Kids
Setting up a routine is vital for children, but getting them to mark off items on a checklist can sometimes be tricky. I’ve found this routine chart to work best for us since it’s fun to flip up and stick.
But here are some other tips to help too!
- Print the chart on card stock or laminate it for a more durable design
- Provide your child with some fun stickers to mark off completed tasks
- Let them draw their own pictures or add color to checkmarks when they complete items
- Allow your child to choose their own markers or crayons, making the routine fun and unique to them
- If your child is older, consider creating a digital routine chart on their tablet or phone
Getting kids to stay on track can be stressful but with a free printable routine chart you can have your morning and nighttime routines managed in no time. Plus, it’s simple enough for for even my 2 year old to do with his brother!
Tips to Keep Your Child Engaged with the Routine Chart
Creating a routine chart for your child is an excellent way to make sure they’re aware of all the tasks they should be completing throughout the day. However, even with the chart, it can still be difficult to keep them engaged and on top of their routines.
One of the best ways to ensure that your child stays interested in their chart is to make it personal. For example, you could draw pictures on each item or include them in the process of deciding what items to include on their routine chart.
It may also help to make completing tasks rewarding with small tokens like candies or stickers—you could even let your kid choose what rewards will motivate them most. Soon, you’ll have your child engaged with their routine chart in no time!
How to help your kids actually use the routine chart
Helping your kids stay organized and make use of routine charts can be easier said than done, but there are a few additional tips to help you on your way.
Firstly, including lighthearted incentives such as earning rewards or stickers can encourage positive behavior and create good habits. Secondly, go over the seasonal routines with your child regularly to ensure they have an up-to-date understanding of all their responsibilities. Lastly, talking about the chart casually in different situations can help cement the idea that these tasks are part of everyday life and should be treated like any other activity.
Another tip is to add a routine to your smart home device like Alexa or Google. You can set them to remind your child to do their morning or bedtime routine at a specific time. That way you don’t even need to remind them!
Keeping track of your daily activities doesn’t need to be tedious—by following these simple tips, you will soon find yourself and your family embracing a new habit of organization!
Where to place a routine chart for kids
I have my 6 year old’s routine chart pins on his bedroom wall right next to his door. I have also seen parents place these in the kitchen, living room or even a family bulletin board. Wherever you decide to place it make sure your child can easily see it and access it.
Keeping my son’s routine chart somewhere he sees it every morning also encourages him to complete his morning routine before he even leaves his room! I would highly recommend this placement for any parent looking to start a routine chart with their child.
