DIY Translucent Powder + The Cheapest & Best Product for “Baking” Your Makeup

Okay all, let me just start off by saying wow! I know my way around a Sephora but let me just tell you I am IN LOVE with this DIY translucent powder! Seriously, I have never had a makeup product that made my skin feel so soft and light, and that’s not even the best part. This DIY translucent powder is dirt cheap! Literally, I think dirt is more expensive per oz than this powder. So let me give you a little back story.

I was dying to try out the awesome “baking” makeup trend when I realized for the life of me I couldn’t find my Make UP For Ever HD microfinishing translucent powder (my fav powder). Obviously, my sister stole it or I probably just used it all 😉 , but either way I was out of translucent powder. Now I was in a bit of a predicament because I was (and still am) loving the so trendy baking technique, yet didn’t have the product to do it!

What is “Baking” your Makeup?

Well for those of you with the confused eyebrow raise who haven’t heard of baking your makeup, let me shine some light here straight from Cosmopolitan.

“The term [baking], which has been used in the drag community for years, refers to letting translucent powder sit on your face for five to 10 minutes, which allows the heat from your face to set your base foundation and concealer, and then dusting it off your face, leaving you with a creaseless, flawless finish.”

Sound amazing? Well, it is! Plus Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist uses this method on her so you know it’s amazing.

As you’ll see, if you see the technique in action (scroll down for a step by step tutorial!), you use a good amount of product while using this baking technique. That is when I hit my other dilemma, not only did I not have any more translucent powder, but I didn’t want to spend another $35 on a pot of powder and waste it all.

And then bam! It was like inspiration hit and I was running around the house for what I thought would be the perfect translucent powder substitute. I mixed my ingredients and just like that, I had a whole new pot of translucent powder! Not only did this DIY translucent powder work perfectly for baking your makeup but I was literally amazed by my results.

I have never used a makeup product that has made my skin feel so soft, light, and lasted all day!

I will never buy translucent powder ever again! Not just because this DIY costs next to nothing but it is literally just the best translucent powder I have used! So baking or not baking I will be using this powder forever and you should too!

DIY Translucent Powder

Here’s What You’ll Need:

2 Tbsp Cornstarch
1 tsp Baby powder
1/4 tsp Cocoa powder (Optional)
Jar or makeup container

Mix and done! Yes, it really is that easy.

Cornstarch and baby powder: Both absorb excess oil which gives you the matte flawless finish like a traditional translucent powder leaving the skin soft and smooth. Making them the perfect dupe for high-end translucent powders.

Cocoa powder: Will help give your powder a slight pigment perfect for all skin tones and contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help to firm and renew the skin. I chose to skip this step because I wanted zero pigment in my powder.

When I first tried this DIY, I simply swapped my translucent powder for straight cornstarch. Which honestly works just as well on its own as with the other two powders. It wasn’t until I saw some ladies swapping out their powders for baby powder that I decided to add some to my DIY.

The cornstarch is the magic in this mix, and is really what gives you the soft flawless look!

Step By Step Baking Tutorial

Yes, as promised a step by step baking tutorial for all of you makeup junkies! I will usually do this after I have done my eye makeup but before putting on my mascara/lashes. That way it can “bake” while I am finishing those steps in my routine.
