What You’ll Need:
- 1″ curling iron with a clamp (not a wand) I use this one.
- Clips to section off hair
- Hair brush (My go-to here)
- Texture spray to hold curls (I use this one)

Step 1: Split your hair into 2 sections
Start with dry hair and brush out any tangles, divide your hair into two sections by separating the top portion, starting from the temples and clip up that hair with a clip.
Step 2: Clamp, slide down, roll up, slide off
Starting in the back, grab a 1-2 inch section of hair. Then, curling away from your face, clamp down on the hair around upper shaft, slide half way down the hair, roll the hair up, slide down again, roll up again, and slide the first roll of hair off the shaft.
Continue sliding down, rolling up, then flipping that top roll off the iron all the way down the section of hair. When you get to the ends, simply slide the ends through the iron.
*TIP: You don’t need to hold you hair on the iron very long. Just keep sliding, rolling and flipping the hair off the iron in one more fluid motion. (You may need to hold it slightly longer if your hair is more coarse or doesn’t take a curl very well.)
Once the hair is curled, don’t touch it!
It will look like a tighter curl but you want the curls to cool that way first.

Step 3: Alternate curling away from, and towards, your face.
On the next 1-2 inch section of hair, curl it the same way except this time curl it towards your face. Still clamp, slide, roll, slide, roll, slide off.
Alternate curling sections away from your face and towards your face until you get to about your ear. Once there everything forward will be curled away from your face.
The alternating curls help to keep them as individual curls and not getting all curled up together into looking like one big curl.

Step 4: Continue to the top section
Once the entire bottom section of hair is all curled, again, don’t touch it! It will look like amish tight curls but resist the urge to touch them! Move onto the top section of hair.
Curl the top section the exact same way as before, alternating directions until the ear mark.
Step 5: Apply Texture Spray
Once both sections are completely curled, but before touching the curls, apply texture spray all over. This will help the curls to hold their wave shape instead of falling completely out once we brush them out.
The texture spray I’ve been using for YEARS can be found here.

Step 6: Brush out the curls
Finally, the last step is to brush out the curls! Yes finally we can touch them!
Brushing out these curls is what takes them from skinny amish curls to the most perfect loose, lived-in, waves! I like to use this detangling brush.
From there you can add a spritz of hair spray but I find the texture spray alone works great for me.
And done! ✅

Conclusion
This is the exact way I’ve been curling my hair for years! Even when I had short hair! (see my short hair curling tutorial here.) This method of curling always gives me the most perfect and customizable hair by simply holding the hair a little longer creating more of a curl than a wave or using larger sections to create big bouncy curls!
