This DIY Triangle Quilt is one of the very first things I made for Jamie! Don’t mind my half started nursery! I am right in the middle of planning, pinning, and DIYing the decor for Jamie’s room. It’s going to be amazing so yes, I will do a nursery reveal when it is all done! (Easy DIY polka dot wall decal coming soon!) Scroll down for Tutorial and Tips for Beginners!
Anyway I love the colors and fabrics I chose for this DIY, which is actually a DIY I found on See Kate Sew. She provides her free printable pattern and easy to follow instructions for this awesome quilt.
I had never made a quilt before, and I seriously underestimated the work and frustration that comes with it! My aunts who quilt soon informed me that I had picked a hard quilt because of the triangles, lucky me. At least I wasn’t doing a king sized quilt right?
The hardest part of doing this quilt was sewing the individual triangles together. Now I would definitely consider myself to have a great attention to detail, and I am the type that can usually figure out a problem on my own. That being said I can’t tell you how many times I would sew the triangles on in the wrong direction! If you don’t sew them alternating up and down then they curve, kind of like a pizza which equals a lot of seam ripping and resewing.
Well, because I had had a few problems with my quilt, when I had finally finished it I felt so proud! My triangle quilt turned out exactly how I wanted it, and was totally worth my little struggles!
So after my experience, I said I wouldn’t be doing another quilt anytime soon, to spare me my mental humiliation. However I am now in the process of making two other quilts! Luckily they are both only going to be rectangles and squares but I am planning on doing a king sized one for Brian and my bed and I am going to be making the pattern. Anyway, stay tuned for those hopefully it doesn’t kill me, and we’ll just have to see how well they turn out!
Tips for beginners:
- Make sure you have a rotary cutter, and acrylic ruler.
- She says you can use scissors, but I can’t imagine how long that would take! So to save yourself a little stress, use a rotary cutter.
- Use Basting adhesive!
- My amazing aunt told me about this stuff and I am so glad she did! This is pretty much just a light spray glue to keep your basting in place while you sew. It was a little difficult getting my front and back on exactly how I wanted it. And without the basting adhesive they slip and slide, never staying in place, so I would suggest to go out and grab some ASAP!
- Have a friend help you!
- This could be your BFF, your mom, or I’m my case my hubby. It really doesn’t matter but It took quite a bit of time to cut out those triangles the two of us, I can’t imagine doing it by myself!
