Curling with a flat iron, or straightener, was actually something I figured out on my own when I was about 13. I was trying to get my bangs to flip out a bit, turned my iron too much and pow! My bangs were curled! My 13-year-old mind was blown to say the least. From there I experimented with different ways to curl with a flat iron and eventually came up with this method.
Now it takes me about 15 minutes to curl my hair using this method, so this is my usual everyday hair. One question I seem to be asked constantly is how I curl my hair, and when answered “with a flat iron”, I get quite a few request to show them exactly how I do it. So I’ve decided to make a post to help those of you who want to know how I curl my hair, or to even just learn how to curl with a flat iron.
Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step 1
First, brush out your hair to release any snarls then part your hair. I work in 4 layers starting with the bottom layer parted from mid-ear to mid ear. My layers continue, temple to temple, then straight up from mid-eyebrow, and the final remaining hair.
I wear my hair parted down the middle, if you wear a side part then your layers may be different, or if your hair is thicker, work with more layers. My hair isn’t thin or thick just plain ol’ average hair so 4 layers works best for me.
Step 2
Once you have sectioned off your first layer, spray it with some thermal protectant. You want to avoid damaging your hair so use a thermal protectant! This one is my fave!!
Step 3 – (The actual curling process)
To curl your hair, take about 1-2 inch pieces from the section and clamp your flat iron at the base (near the scalp) then pull and twist outward at the same time. I do 2 full rotations with my flat iron, making sure the end of my iron is pointing mostly down. If you don’t point the end down then your curls will be tighter, but I like mine loose. Kind of like beachy waves.
After completely curling, release and twist the piece of hair out ward with your finger to help with the formation of the curl. I also like to slide my flat iron lightly on the ends very quickly just to loosen the ends of the curl a bit. Then fully release hair. (sorry for the old GIF)
Step 4
Continue through the rest of your hair! I like to hairspray each layer after I am done with it.
Step 5
Next, flip your head upside down and apply the hairspray! I will sit upside down for a second to let the hairspray set a bit then flip my hair back over.
Step 6
Finally Use your fingers, to lightly brush through your hair to prevent the hair spray from giving you a helmet of hair, and Wallah! Beautiful beachy curls with your flat iron! Finish off the look with some hair oil on the ends to add shine and hydration.

It’s not “wallah”, it’s “voila”. It’s a French word.
